We are welcoming today Tsubasa Numayama, a member of Prof. Masumi Taki's group at the University of Electrocommunications in Tokyo that will join us for one year through a TOBITATE grant from the Japanese MEXT. He will be working on the development of point-of-care nanodevices for cancer management.

Davide Manfredo and Nicolò Cambiasso are two mathematicians from Trento University joining our group today for three months to complete their MSc work on developing advanced computational methods for traslational magnetic hyperthermia. Welcome!

Daniel delivered a talk at a focused meeting celebrated in Sibiu (Romania) with the remit of the MyWAVE COST action. The workshop was about best practices and requirements in conducting dielectric and thermal measurements, all aimed to improve the existing electromagnetic hyperthermic techniques.

Daniel spoke at the European Technology Platform for Nanomedicine (ETPN) annual meeting held at the Iberian Nanotechnology Institute (INL) in Braga, Portugal. He presented the RADIOMAG COST action in a session devoted to European projects in nanomedicine.

Irene presented at the 2nd Spanish Conference on Biomedical Applications of Nanomaterials (SBAN), held in Madrid, June 6th - 7th 2019, at Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid. Her poster was focused on the results of a collaboration with our colleagues from the Fluorescence Imaging group at UAM: using thermal relaxation of tissues as a means for early detection of solid tumours.

Irene and Daniel attended the 10th International Conference on Fine Particle Magnetism held in Gijón, Spain. We presented the outcomes from our collaboration with the Fluorescence Image group from UAM and some glimpses about the interlaboratory experiment carried out within the RADIOMAG COST action on the determination of the specific loss power from magnetic nanocolloids for magnetic hyperthermia.

Also, Irene picked up an award on behalf of our institute IMDEA Nanoscience! She presented a poster on the satellite event 'Inspiring women in science' held within the conference.

Daniel participated in the COST Connect "Beating cancer in 2030: mission impossible?" event in Brussels on 21 and 22 May. Aimed at shaping the future of cancer research in Europe, this meeting brought together 37 COST actions related to this topic, along with many other relevant stakeholders. The outcomes of the meeting will be made public in the near future. More details about the event here.

We welcome Francesca Brero, from the Università degli studi di Pavia, who will join us a visiting researcher for two months. Focusing on the stability of magnetic colloids for biomedical applications, during her stay Francesca will study the complex interactions of different coating molecules with magnetic nanoparticles and the surrounding medium.

We have been awarded an NVIDIA GPU seed grant, through which we will have access to the world's most powerful workstation GPU unit to date. Consequently, our computational capabilities have considerably expanded, opening new horizons to our in silico testing of nanotechnology-based cancer therapies. Thanks NVIDIA!

We have been demonstrating for the public within the Science Week program of IMDEA Nanoscience. One more year, students and teachers learnt about our research in nanomedicine, specifically about our in silico trials.

This activity belongs to the Science Week program in Madrid.

Daniel was invited to deliver a talk ('Whither nanomedicine in Europe: a sneak preview') at the Irago Conference, held this year at the Washington Shinjuku Hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The Irago Conference series was launched in 2011 with the objective of providing an ‘interdisciplinary-platform’ to enhance mutual understanding between scientists and engineers from academia and industry, policy makers, and experts from a wide spectrum of pure and applied sciences to resolve the daunting global issues facing mankind.

The final RADIOMAG workshop took place in Florence the 16-18th of October in Villa Ruspoli. A great bunch of posters as well as invited and contributed talks, put an unofficial end to our RADIOMAG COST action. A great success!

We have just published our collaboration with the Fluorescence Imaging Group at the UAM in Advanced Functional Materials! It is about a new nanothermometry method based on thermal transients for cancer detection and diagnosis. In silico results support experimental in vivo observations on the use of this technique to detect tumours in mice a week before than through visual inspection.

Daniel attended the first management committee meeting of the new MyWAVE COST action in the premises of the COST Association in Brussels. 

MyWAVE Action takes a holistic approach by bringing together key players in the field of dielectric spectroscopy, translational research, and medical professionals. Conjoining these varied communities into one collaborative network is critical to advance the design, development, and commercialisation of EM hyperthermic technologies, so that they can reach patients faster and improve treatment outcomes.

The network currently includes leading research groups from 25 countries within the EU and seven international participants, with a total of about 80 researchers. The network’s activities are set to kick off with the first international meeting that will take place later on this year in Malta. This meeting will outline the current state-of-the art and pave the way forward towards achieving the MyWAVE goals.

Daniel became a member of the management committee of the COST action CA17115 "European network for advancing Electromagnetic hyperthermic medical technologies" (MyWAVE). We congratulate our colleague Francisco Terán, the leader of the NANOMAGBIOTECH group, for being also appointed member of the management committee as Spanish representative.

Today we are kicking-off the 8th Early Stage Researchers Workshop in Nanoscience, a scientific meeting focused on nanoscience where early stage researchers, mainly PhD students and postdocs are invited to participate by presenting their work through oral communications and posters.

Irene brilliantly presented one of our latest set of results on in silico testing as a poster at the 12th International Conference on the Scientific and Clinical Applications of Magnetic Carriers, held in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is the reference conference for anyone doing research on magnetic micro/nano structures for biomedical applications.

This symposium is organised by the RSC Chemical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (RSC-CNN) Group, and covers the recent developments in fundamental studies, novel material development and reactor engineering in these areas, with the aim to provide a forum for researchers to exchange information, share ideas, and discuss recent advances and the scientific challenges.

Irene and Daniel attended the last RADIOMAG action progress meeting & conference, held at the Library of the Politehnica University in Timisoara. The program, besides the meetings of the working groups and the management committee to assess the progress of the action, included invited and contributed talks from experts related to magnetic nanoparticles for hyperthermia.

Our group has attended the NALS2017 conference in Gijón (Spain) along with other colleagues from IMDEA Nanoscience. Irene has contributed a talk entitled "In silico magnetic hyperthermia: considerations about blood perfusion and nanoparticles arrangement on tissue power deposition" and Daniel an invited talk "Dosimetric and safety aspects of magnetic hyperthermia: an in silico approach". Great conference, great place and great people!

Speaking about our RADIOMAG action at the "COST Get Together" event in Brussels. The COST Get Together is a ‘social’ event bringing together EU and national policy makers, the European research funding community as well as COST governance.
